Another day, another case of an e-cigarette exploding enters the news. The reality is that these cases are rare; with the proper precautions it is highly unlikely that your e-cigarette will explode.
Here’s what you need to do to ensure that your vaping experience is a safe one.
1. Make sure you’re informed
Ensure you know the specs of your model. Take the time to read your manual and memorise the exact make, battery type and manufacturer. You do not have to know everything there is about every e-cigarette out there, but you should at least know a lot about the one you’re using. Know exactly just how to clean and maintain your unit to keep it functioning as it should. If you need help, your local vape shop should be able to help you.
2. Don’t just use any charger
E-cigarette models will come with their own dedicated chargers, use them. Resist the urge to think you can just easily swap without risk. Chargers are made to suit specific models and mismatching chargers to different models might lead to overheating. If you’re unsure whether a charger is safe to use, ask the seller of your e-cigarette or a knowledgeable vape seller.
3. Use only certified cables
For e-cigarettes that use common ports e.g. microUSB, resist buying cheap cables of dubious make. The reason more expensive cables cost more is because they’ve been certified to meet certain standards, unlike cheaper cables that could just fry your electronics. A decent cable is much cheaper than having to buy a new e-cigarette.
4. Don’t leave e-cigs charging unattended
Make sure you charge your e-cigarette where you can see it. Best to charge it on a flat, non-flammable surface to ensure it and the surroundings aren’t damaged. Put it away as soon as it finishes charging.
5. Store your e-cigarette in a cool, safe place
When you’re not carrying your e-cigarette with you, store it in a cool location, preferably in a dedicated holder away from sun and heat. One of the worst places to leave e-cigarettes (or anything with a lithium battery) is in a car. Besides risking theft, temperatures inside a car can go up very quickly. Besides extreme heat, extreme cold and water are also things you should keep away from your e-cigarette.
6. Ensure you only buy from reputable sellers
Be judicious about choosing a vape seller. If buying online, take the time to vet through reviews and testimonials to ensure you’re not just getting a good price, but a reliable, working unit. Ask questions and take as long as you need to make an informed decision.
7. Be careful when tinkering with mods
If you’re just starting out, stick to simpler e-cigarettes. As tempting as it is to swap tanks and parts out, be sure you know what you’re doing and get advice. Some customised builds might be fun to assemble and use, but be careful that you’re not compromising on safety. At the end of the day, your safety should come first.
